What You Should Look For In GPS Navigation Systems

without comments

The days of men and women traveling by means of the usage of maps or just as a result of their whimsical fancy are all in the past these days. In place of using maps or just asking for directions, individuals currently have handy sets of GPS navigation systems to guide them on their way. With all the array of GPS devices on the market these days, it is often extremely difficult to pick out the one that’s the very best match for your needs. Based on the requirements of the motorist, picking out the correct GPS can make a possibly daunting trip into a joyful trip.

The first piece of the GPS to examine will be the size of the display itself, which varies from only a couple of inches to close to half a foot. What to look for on the display size is whether or not the driver would be comfortable viewing that display while driving. Additionally, the differences between the widescreen GPS and normal square screen GPS can make a difference.

Next up when choosing from the many different GPS navigation systems is the differences between the different talk back features on the unit. Most of the models in the marketplace today all offer some type of talk back, but there are two important variations. Certain GPS units will have the voice say something like “turn left in 300 feet” and other varieties will say “turn left on Wilson Street.” When the driver is an individual who has a basic knowledge of the location they’re in, this will likely not really be much of an issue whatsoever. However, when a person is traveling to a vicinity where they’ve never been previously, then working with the street specific dialogue is far better.

Not everybody who is utilizing a GPS is traveling in just one particular country; some people will in fact bring those devices to a foreign nation. When picking out that perfect GPS, the consumer may wish to determine if the product incorporates pre-loaded maps of additional countries they might be planing a trip to. When the specific GPS a person would like doesn’t come preloaded, then they can normally be updated on the internet using a preloaded SD card.

The most critical thing to remember when searching for GPS navigation systems is the fact that investigation is the best tool of all. You can find a lot of unique GPS units available from numerous different providers like Garmin, TomTom, Magellan and others. Whether or not a person reads a review online or in a publication, the more research done, the more information they’ll have when picking out which product is correct for them.

As technology continues to move forward, so will the engineering in GPS systems and they are going to continue to do so in the future. So whether or not a traveler is driving far away or close by, picking the right GPS unit can make all the difference.

Are you looking for the best GPS navigation system? Be sure to visit my site to read my reviews of the Garmin Nuvi 205 and Garmin Nuvi 265WT.

Using GPS For Automobile Navigation

without comments

For many companies GPS car tracking is the solution that solves many security problems. In the attempt to limit criminality, the police as well as the government often use GPS car tracking, although, there are also private users, civilians that turn to tracking systems too. The device is a small unit that when attached to a vehicle or a person provides precise information on the position of the asset. A GPS car tracking unit could also record the data or simply transmit it to a computer, a cellular or some other form of central database. The device requires a satellite, radio or cellular modem incorporated in order to be able to perform the transmission.

The data provided by a GPS car tracking system is displayed on a map, either in real time or as a later analysis using a customized software. Data can be later downloaded from the memory card of the device, which is very similar to a simple flash memory. Although the GPS car tracking system works great for criminal investigations and the prevention of car theft, many people use a GPS device while jogging or hiking as a means to analyze the duration and the length of the trip. Sometimes, one can also collect data to create a map with the help of a GIS software, particularly since a GPS receiver serves for such geo-catching purposes perfectly well.

Mobile phone GPS tracking or GPS car tracking can serve well for sophisticated investigations from the business environment. When commercial fleets are used, the GPS car tracking units are installed in the vehicles in such a way so that the location is constantly pinpoint, and periodical updates continue to be sent at regular intervals. The data provided by the GPS car tracking system can also be displayed in the form of reports, a system that is widely used both in Europe and in North America.

Taxis and delivery vehicles, armored trucks and all sorts of expensive automobiles are equipped with GPS car tracking units so that the location of the vehicle can be constantly monitored. With more special units, one can activate the tracker via a SMS but only in theft cases. The device is thus incredibly efficient for the authorities that deal with lost or stolen vehicles cases. Very often GPS car tracking systems are installed on race cars particularly in the case of long circuits in areas that are more difficult to access.

How Portable GPS Systems Work

without comments

While lots of devices are limited to in-car usage, a portable GPS system allows for all the mobility you may need. Older GPS designs require cabling and combinations either with Palms or PDAs, relying on this adaptation and on car power. The portable GPS unit is designed according to special standards that allow for outside usage in various  applications and sports such as hiking, climbing, cycling, fishing and the like. Even if the functionality and the features are similar, there are lots of differences between car GPS units and portable GPS systems.

the ease of programming, the detour options and the speed of the satellite connection make the difference in terms of system proficiency. All these make the handheld or portable GPS system models a viable choice with multiple applications. Always buy a waterproof and weather resistant GPS item if you are going to use it in various temperature and outdoor conditions. The new portable GPS system can also be adjusted to car usage because of the design versatility. You can for example use the GPS device to find alternative routes that avoid traffic jams.

Are there any criteria to be used for the correct choice of the portable GPS system? You can try the Internet and search for comparisons between the best rated models. There are in fact, web pages that provide comprehensive comparisons, reviews and price information. The pros and cons of various portable GPS system models are discussed, and you can also choose from the shopping suggestions. It is important to stress out the fact that the navigation system should be tested for more than the vocal announcements, although this feature has a considerable significance too.

Consider the relevance of a certain feature of the portable GPS system for your personal needs. Size is also important for a portable design. If the GPS comes with a screen it may not fit your pocket, therefore, check this portability range too. Then, the price of the portable GPS system should be on your mind. If you insist on buying a cheap unit, you risk to buy a poor quality item that will function only sporadically. Automatic rerouting and the possibility to calculate the remaining distance or travel time to destination are equally valuable in a portable GPS.

How GPS Satellites Determine Your Position

without comments

The US military forces launched the first GPS satellite in 1978. Since then, more then three dozens satellites have been launched on Earth’s orbit, servicing not only military and aviation forces but individual private users worldwide. The very existence of the Global Positioning System has in fact claimed the life of more than one GPS satellite, lost during the launch or on the orbit. Some satellites were taken out of service, others required replacements for technical purposes, but what matters most is how the technology is applied in the performance of daily tasks. The decoding of the satellite signal is done by a GPS device or receiver that provides the exact geographical location according to three-dimensional coordinates.

Presently, almost any smartphone includes a form of GPS satellite navigation with different mapping support and applications. The GPS seems to have become an integrated part of people’s life, but one has to wonder what will happen in a couple of years when the now orbiting satellites will have to be replaced. For the moment, there are management and funding issues that seem to act against the proper reconditioning of the Global Positioning System. The US Air Force is in charge of the entire GPS satellite structure, but according to a recent May 2009 report, there are economic difficulties to be overcome.

The average user will hardly notice if any of the 31 orbiting satellites will fail, because normally, four satellites at time on the sky are enough to provide adequate information. Sometimes information may get redundant as six up to eight satellites can get connected to a GPS receiver for the same tasks. But in the eventuality of no real time positioning with the GPS satellite structures, we’d have to start using maps all over again. The transportation systems, the maritime and military forces would be the most affected if the satellites are not reconditioned.

The European states are preparing the launch of an independent satellite navigation system in 2010 that would be an alternative to the American GPS satellite applications that are now most popular. Besides the USA, other countries that have GPS satellite dominance are Russia, China and India, that operate their own Global Positioning systems. No matter how things are managed in terms of policy, implementation and administration at the global level, the average user should not be seriously troubled by the different modifications that may occur in the GPS satellite system. More and more people will in fact start using GPS devices for increased efficiency of navigation.

Get the GPS You Need

with 4 comments

There is no one best GPS unit, but a great variety of models and designs, one more peculiar than another. Manufacturers like Magellan, Mio, TomTom and Garmin compete for the first position in top. As it happens in the entire field of electronics, with every new product there comes an expectation of improvement. Innovation is what keeps the market going, and the best GPS is always the one that corresponds to the latest consumer’s demands. Here are some tips to help you with the buying decision, with the mention that no reviews can be 100% true or reliable, because no matter how objective we’d like to be, there is still a slight bias rate.

Features such as Bluetooth, web direct services, text-to-speech functionality as well as speech recognition represent some of the most valuable features that qualify an item as the best GPS device. Another important aspect is the speed of route calculation, and why not price? It is only normal to expect incredible performance from a Garmin GPS device. You can also shop for advanced lane assistance and the possibility to enter addresses via voice. The best GPS units available will have 3D renderings although this function is not available with all designs. There are very few distinctions between the brand name manufacturers, and the differences usually result from two or three features plus or minus.

The user interface could also define the best GPS unit available. Those items that have a high user friendliness rate represent ideal choices for all categories of users. Other than this characteristics of new GPS models, it is fair to refer to the pricing scheme as well. It goes without saying that anyone eager to buy the best GPS unit, should be prepared to pay a small fortune for it. In fact, if you read online reviews, you’ll see that pricing is the main inconvenience mentioned in the ‘bad’ section.

There are sales where you can buy the best GPS for your pocket. Models older than a year get discounts occasionally, and all producers are interested to have those sold in order to be able to enter the market with new items. To conclude, we could say that the very notion of ‘best’ is relative when it comes to the purchase of any item. The general lines of defining the best GPS device will nevertheless include a high number of features, the latest incorporated technologies and a high price.

A Review of Magellan GPS Navigators

without comments

Nearly all of the major GPS device marketers are making efforts to further develop their wares. They are offering more up-to-date features to make navigation easier for travelers who use wheels, sneakers, or any other method of transportation in between. Although these companies are really trying to keep these GPS devices affordable for the middle-class consumer, the consequence of all the technology housed in the device will understandably be larger price tags. The best that these designers can do for those of us who can’t pay for all the latest technology is to market absolutely basic models of the GPS devices which are affordable for Joe 6-cylinder. A nice option is the Magellan Roadmate–70 Portable GPS Navigator.

Magellan GPS devices are rather singular since they have always made their top-selling models to be inexpensive and convenient. The downside of affordability, naturally, is that state-of-the-art technology is almost never available at low prices. Predictably, then, the quality of Magellan’s GPS models has been given mixed reviews. Magellan addressed this shortcoming by producing several high-end products for the more dedicated GPS users.

Magellan Maestro

If you are searching for a reasonably priced navigator for your dashboard, the Magellan Maestro line-up provides many devices that are specifically for car navigation. Magellan Maestro models are available in the 3000, 4000, and 5000 classes. All of the 3000 models are very reasonably priced with one or two like the Maestro 3100 available at less than $200 which is amazingly cheap for a GPS unit with 2-D and 3-D mapping capabilities. Probably their most appreciated ability is the QuickSpell feature, that enables uncomplicated input for road names.

Every other measurable quality, as well as the performance is barely satisfactory and hanging is quite constant. With the exception of some of the 4000 and 5000 models, the Magellan Maestro is simply not reliable, but the price is still reasonable.

Magellan Roadmate

As implied by their name, this collection of Magellan GPS devices were made for cars also. However they are different from their Maestro siblings as far as appearance. Roadmates are designed to be more portable, having a smaller profile yet having the same interface. As a result the Roadmates are about as easy to operate and much easier to keep than the Maestros. A great unit is the Magellan Road mate–70 Portable GPS Navigator.

In terms of performance, the Roadmate is a bit improved with several specimens such as the Roadmate 1212 having the Centrality Atlas III Processor. If you are fond of navigating through the menus, you will likely notice a slightly frustrating delay after pushing the buttons. The battery power isn’t that spectacular either; it’s usable for about 3 hours until a recharge is called for.

On the bright side, the Roadmate is thought to be better than several of the Maestro budget models, logging far more POI’s than the Maestro 3100 which has a inadequate 750,000 points of interest. The Roadmate closes the gap with competing manufacturers by offering over 6 million points of interest. Text-to-speech, which is generally a welcome feature, is also included in several of the affordable models. The price isn’t too bad either, which is notable for a slim device. A good device to look into is the Magellan Roadmate–70 Portable GPS Navigator.

Despite the fact that there are only two line-ups to select from, they each provide at least 10 models within each set in a range of different price tags and options. The cheapest of the bunch aren’t recommended for regular users owing to the occasional crashes, but high-end models can do wonders and ought to be suitable for drivers to be pleased with.

Joseph Aaron writes for an online project helping consumers make educated purchase decisions on GPS Navigation Systems. Amongst the highest rated GPS units recommended on his website is the Magellan Roadmate 1470.

Are Garmin GPS Navigation Systems Over-rated?

without comments

You probably don’t observe the Garmin Nuvi brand daily unless you are always on the road and have experience with GPS devices. If you intend to get into the GPS generation and would like something that is very easy to plug in and use, Garmin GPS devices could answer your needs rather well. Even though some of the feature rich models are priced much higher than the lesser models you’ll find in stores, they additionally carry a few lighter Garmin devices that will fit the budget and nonetheless perform well for drivers. A great model to consider is the Garmin Nuvi 1300 Portable GPS Navigator.

Garmin Nuvi 205 Series

These Garmin GPS models are the ones to consider for the value conscious. One of the interesting characteristics of the Nuvi 205 is that the software applications bear a striking resemblance to the more well-appointed Garmin GPS models, so you are basically investing in an inexpensive GPS model that “feels expensive”.

Keep in mind that some of the models in this series were given a “W” at the end. That indicates “widescreen” and ought to be your better option considering the wider viewing space that you will appreciate when 2-D or 3-D maps are being used. A few of the more recent models like the well-recieved 255W provide a text-to-speech function which is reliable in receiving directions without any distractions.

All of the more up to date units in this series are very convenient to install compared to some of the other manufacturers’ systems that call for some fussing with before they may be installed. They additionally come fully equipped with maps of Canada, Mexico, the US and major parts of Europe which includes more than 6 million different points of interests you’ll want to see in each of the countries. These points are things like popular restaurants, shopping centers, government buildings, and other locales to see. Additionally, your favorite POI’s can be added easily thanks to its interface. These entry level GPS units are the perfect ones to own for a normal car driver in need of a reliable electronic advisor.

Garmin Nuvi 705 Series

If you ever find any Garmin Nuvi model labeled with a 7, you can bet that the purchase price ought to impact your credit score, yet if you make time to consider the features it provides, you will realize that the Garmin Nuvi 705 series is worth the price for a driver who makes their living while being in a car.

Every one of the devices in this series have useful navigation options such as lane assist, which directs users to the appropriate lane in times when a difficult turn is called for. On top of that, Bluetooth connectivity is provided for some of the better appointed models in the 705 series. By the way, the interface is the same and all the other features in the 205 models are available in the 705 too. Another unit to consider is the Garmin Nuvi 1300 Widescreen Portable GPS.

Garmin Nuvi 805 Series

Currently Garmin offers only 2 models part of the 805 series. They are very comparable to the 705 series models, which is the reason that the number isn’t all that different. But the most noticeable function is the voice-activated navigation installed in these models. To offer a simple explanation, you can give instructions to your GPS device for hands-free operation.

There are still other Garmin GPS units which are given 4-digit series numbers, but Garmin’s 3 digit series devices are best suited for consumers who commute daily and would like a few helpful applications. Any of the latest models in those series do not let you down. Also, the the Garmin Nuvi 1300 Portable GPS Navigator is a nice option to look into.

Your GPS Navigator’s Not Complete Without Accessories

without comments

The most recent GPS devices found in stores usually have enough functions to accomodate most car owners who would like their car navigation to be straightforward and safe. Yet there may be times in which you reach the limits of your GPS device and still would prefer that your GPS device had more functions or more strong design for not-so-smooth situations. A great model to look into is the Garmin Nuvi 770 Portable GPS Navigator.

Don’t get rid of your GPS device and purchase another GPS device to meet your expanding requirements just yet. There are GPS accessories that may be compatible with your unit and could give it some added capabilities that can live up to your expectations. The prices you’ll pay for any of these GPS accessories are obviously well below the price of a new GPS device. Below are a few of the standard GPS accessories that are marketed by each one of the major brands.

Chargers

Most of the less expensive models do not last very long because of many of them posessing a battery life of a measly 2-3 hours. Because of this you are required to charge your GPS devices every now and then during long drives. Even though most of those devices usually are packaged with a GPS charger, there will probably be instances when the charger breaks or might be lost. Do not settle for those imitation chargers as they will likely mess up the battery. Always use chargers sold by the manufacturer of your GPS device. These chargers will fully charge the device quickly, which lets you rely on it for long road trips. A nice option to consider is the Garmin Nuvi 770 GPS Navigation system.

Carrying Cases

These GPS accessories can be quite low-cost and helpful accessories that are engineered to defend your GPS device from exposure to an assortment of elements. Even though some GPS devices are rugged enough to withstand these elements because of their own casings, a carrying case provides one more barrier against the world, and the cases with straps are easier to hold on to. Travel cases are improved styles of carrying cases which are still compact, yet made for holding additional GPS accessories such as chargers.

Adhesive Discs

A few types of GPS devices can be entirely too complicated to fasten to certain kinds of car windshields. Before the frustration becomes unbearable, think about spending a few bucks on some adhesive disks. Fastening your GPS device should be as easy as sticking this disc to the windshield or another flat surface and then mounting a GPS device onto the disc.

Car Kits

The kind and quantity of accessories offered which comprise a car kit may vary according to the maker, but in general, car kits are the handiest GPS accessories to get if you don’t know what accessories you actually need or if you simply wish to be prepared for any inevitable situations. Most of the car kits include mounting kits, adhesive disks, data cables, and power adapters. In case you have lost some accessories, a car kit may easily replace your supply or provide more for “just in case” scenarios. Take a look at the Garmin Nuvi 770 Portable GPS Navigator for a nice unit.

Certain models might have more accessories than others; so the most sensible way to learn about accessories for a certain GPS device is to open up the product page which applies to your device and find the accessories made for your device to avoid paying for any redundant purchases.

Joseph Aaron is involved with an online project that helps his readers make educated purchase decisions on GPS Navigation Systems. Amongst the highest rated GPS units recommended on his website is the Garmin Nuvi 770 GPS Navigation System.

Navigate Your Way Accurately with GPS

with 2 comments

Many of the GPS devices that you see on the market nowadays are for autos for the reason that most consumers have not less than one car which is in most cases their primary form of getting to and from work or errands. The latest GPS devices have the best and newest functions that enable drivers to find the destination of their choice faster and easier. A great model for you to consider is the Garmin Nuvi 1250 Portable GPS Navigator.

Just a few years back, GPS devices were used only by serious travelers who went all over the place either overland or on the sea. Marine GPS technology has evolved to cater to seafarers and make the GPS functions applicable to them. GPS is particularly effective in directing seamen through open waters and could be a real lifesaver during an emergency or just in a situation when you find yourself lost in the middle of the ocean. The same makers who produced effective GPS devices for the road also offer a selection of marine GPS products.

Garmin Marine GPS Devices

Garmin Nuvi devices have been regarded as the ideal in the areas of accuracy and navigational features. Garmin’s marine devices which include the GPSMAP 5015 and GPSMAP 5215 also include sound construction and reliable performance. Each one of those traits are outrageously significant when a boat is 50 miles from land and the crew has no place to stop and climb a tree. A few of the notable functions include enhanced sensors, chartplotters for more exact planning on the water, and a marine autopilot system for uncomplicated navigation.

Garmin marine products come in either handheld or larger versions with bigger LCD screens providing more sophisticated maps which include backgrounds, lighthouse locations, obstructions, buoys, and more. Several versions enable the user to download information on flash drives for backup purposes or for editing on a personal computer. All of the better products in this group are waterproof, and their housings are purposely constructed in such a way that the appliance comes to the surface if accidentally dropped in the ocean.

Magellan Maestro Devices

The good thing about some of the more advanced models of the Magellan Maestro is that each GPS unit is able to be operated overland as well as out on the ocean. Yachtsmen can effortlessly attach these Maestros inside their boats or just keep it in your pocket as if it were a normal handheld appliance. This product’s exactness in open waters is superior and the technology used for the navigation is rather high-grade on account of it can triangulate signals from as many as 12 different satellites to determine your correct position.

If you are familiar with the Maestro, you should have no trouble as you are employing the user interface while sailing. When in the market for one which will be made for maritime work, determine if the device is offered with a waterproof rubber casing.

TomTom GPS Devices

TomTom GPS devices for the most part are more focused on car navigation, although they can be actually applied as marine GPS devices, also. A few versions like the TomTom 720 GPS are able to load marine charts and can also be used to make routes. Places on the ocean won‘t be mapped as they would be on land, but the good news is that TomTom owners will know where they are and should not be required to buy a specific marine GPS device. A nice unit to purchase is the Garmin Nuvi 1250 Portable GPS Navigator.

The GPS unit that you have currently can additionally be relied on as a marine GPS. You might need to buy a dedicated marine GPS device only if you normally move on the open ocean because those have better and more specific maps.
